Jacob is a full-time college professor and freelance professional outdoor writer/photographer. He has received numerous awards from professional outdoor writing/media organizations for his work. His articles and photography focus on environmental and biological issues, with emphasis on sharing his knowledge with the public as well as his students. Professor VanHouten taught at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic as a visiting Fulbright Scholar from Delta College, University Center, Michigan USA. His area of study is stream ecology and macroinvertebrates in freshwater systems, as well as environmental science. He is the Environmental Technology Program Coordinator for Delta College and has served as Biology Discipline Chair multiple times. VanHouten has studied, lectured, and led student study abroad trips numerous times. Countries visited include: Czech Republic, China, South Korea, England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Mexico, and Canada.
He has taught/guest lectured at Trinity College Dublin, Oxford University, Charles University, Central Michigan University, Michigan Technological University, and Saginaw Valley State University.
For the past 10 years he has served his country as an emergency responder (Reservist, EHP: Environmental and Historic Preservation) in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Deployments have included natural and human caused disasters such as floods, hurricanes, fires, and earthquakes.
While at Delta, he has received numerous faculty awards, including the Bergstein Award for Teaching Excellence; Ormond Barstow-Ludo Frevel Award Scholarly Achievement (2 times), and Gerstacker Faculty Award for Innovative use of Technology in Teaching; Don Laughner Award for Creative Change; among others.
He continues his teaching and research while serving on boards and as President and/or Chairman of the board for numerous professional organizations representing national, regional and state entities. Professor VanHouten sits on the editorial board for the European Journal of Environmental Sciences.
His hobbies include hunting, fishing, camping, writing and photography while spending time with his wife Christine and two dogs Jager and Kodie. He resides in Midland, Michigan USA.
